First Flag Raising
It has long been tradition at Chets Creek to unite as a family and show our patriotism every other Friday by participating in a flag raising ceremony. It's the only time I can assemble our huge school together at once. Our fifth grade patrols (all 107 of them) do a fantastic job taking on the roles they have watched since Kindergarten by running the ceremony!

Thank you for continuing this wonderful tradition. Our patrols were so excited to be apart of their first flag raising. One of our new students to Chets who just became a patrol this week, gave me a big hug and thanked me for helping her become a patrol. This is what it's all about, making a positive difference in the life of a child:-)
Our baby kindergarteners were in awe of the Flag Raising. What a great learning opportunity for patriotism and traditions!
Every year when I see that l-o-o-n-g line of patrols, I am awe. I am so thankful that we give so many 5th graders a chance to shine! After all these years of watching the trees grow on that playground, I couldn't help but notice how full they have grown this year, providing so much shade for the playground, but now I can barely see across to the patrols! How time changes things - now we need to cut out a bottom layer of branches! Just LOVE flag raising!

This really is a very nice tradition that should not be taken for granted. I correspond with a fellow in England that told me that you have to have written permission to display the Union Jack these days (has to do with their former status as a colonial empire). So, I always insist that my classes display appropriate respect during this ceremony. It's the least we can do when we live in place that allows the personal freedoms we enjoy.

The patrols were STARS! This is an awesome tradition at CCE that really teaches children to be good, patriotic citizens. I was touched this summer to see my children (without being reminded) immediately stand, salute the flag, and sing the National Anthem at a Miami Marlins game. CCE teaches lifelong lessons!
