Save Duval Schools!

This week, a grassroots effort was launched to assist DCPS in raising awareness about how the budget shortfall is affecting the students in Duval County. The effort, named Save Duval Schools has a Web site http://www.saveduvalschools.org/ where our community can go to get information on the shortfall and find out ways to take action.

On Monday, March 16 at 7:00 PM there will be a special Budget Information Meeting for parents and our community here at Chets Creek in the Dining Room. I urge you to come, get educated and then take action in saving public education in your own neighborhood and in our state!

I just have to relate a conversation that I had with a long time friend today regarding the school budget. I was talking with my buddy, and he was insistent that the current education budget crisis was nothing more than a mismanagement of funds by the "elected administration". He babbled on about how all of this has to be due to waste because we get $X per child and we have 20 kids per class (he actually broke out a calculator), and he said we should have plenty of money, if not for waste.

I tried to reason with him, but he would not budge. He is older and has no kids in school, but he has the ear of his gated community. He is dead-set aginst any additional taxation, and he is very eloquent.

I guess my point is pointing out that not all folks are concerned about kids and the quality of education. Many will recoil at the first mention of any additional taxation, and it will take a monumental roar from those of us that are a bit better informed to see things through to a beneficial conclusion.

If it were still the 1960's, I'd say, "If you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem." That sounds harsh, but I do feel justified in making such a statement. Our children deserve our commitment!

Peace,
